CHAPTER 1: WHY DOES ONE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ALL OF THIS, ANYWAY?

Brain disorders affect millions of people worldwide. Many individuals suffering from brain tumors, brain blood vessel abnormalities, brain hemorrhage, brain trauma, hydrocephalus, and so forth, will require brain surgery to help them live. Every year in the United States of America (USA) alone, over 250,000 patients are operated on by neurosurgeons. For this reason, there arises a great need to provide more detailed, reader-friendly and practical information to the general Public regarding the many aspects of brain surgery. This book serves to address such a need.

After reading this book, the reader should have a good working knowledge of the various types of brain disorders, the way such disorders can present, the options for their investigation and treatment, and what to expect during and after treatment. Such knowledge should empower neurosurgical patients and their families with the ability to make well informed decisions along the way.
